Biography

Betty Makaya is an award-winning Zimbabwean singer, songwriter and one of the pioneering voices of the Urban Grooves movement. Renowned for her rich vocals, emotional storytelling and timeless love songs, she has built a legacy that continues to influence generations of African musicians and music lovers alike.

Betty discovered her passion for music at an early age through church and school choirs. Inspired by her late mother and influenced by artists including Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Chiwoniso Maraire and Thandiswa Mazwai, she developed a distinctive sound that blends R&B, soul and contemporary African music.

Her breakthrough came with the release of her debut album Ndichange Ndiripo, regarded as one of the defining albums of Zimbabwe's Urban Grooves era. Songs such as Usipo, Ndakusuwa and the iconic collaboration Kurwizi with the late Jamal Mataure established her as one of Zimbabwe's leading female recording artists.

Throughout her career Betty has collaborated with respected artists including Alexio Kawara and Langton Deo while earning critical acclaim for her songwriting, vocal ability and authentic storytelling. Her music continues to resonate across Zimbabwe and the global diaspora.

Now based in the United Kingdom, Betty continues to record, perform and connect with audiences while expanding her reach across international markets through strategic representation and live performances.
